How Hawthorne Grade School Got Named

It was 1912.  A new grade school had just been built and it needed a name.  Here's how the Journal reported it in June, 1912.

Salina's new school building north of the Union Pacific tracks will be known as the "Hawthorne" and the honor of suggesting the name selected by the board of education at the meeting last night belongs to John Lantz, the seven-and-a-half-year-old son of the Rev. B.R. Lantz, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church. In addition to the honor of having the name he suggested chosen by the board, John will also receive the prize of $2 offered by the Journal for the child under 15 suggesting the name by which the school should be known.

The name, Hawthorne, was chosen by the board after a thorough discussion in which the other names were each carefully considered. It is an appropriate name for a school and will meet the approval of a large number of citizens.

The Journal's contest elicited a great deal of interest on the part of the children, and the board of education had a fine list of names from which to choose. Many of the children voted for names suggestive of the location of the school, such as Northern, North Park, North Star and North View. Others suggested names incorporating the name of the street on which the new building was located, and Grand View and Grand Avenue received favorable mention. Among the other names sent in by the children were Somerlid, Progressive, Protection, IXL, and Security.
